Privacy-First Verification
This validator uses Client-Side Processing. Your card information never leaves your device, providing a secure environment to test for input errors or generic validity.
How it Works
Identifies Visa, MC, AMEX via BIN numbers.
Runs the mathematical proof for the card string.
Standard Network Patterns
Almost all payment networks follow specific starting digits (BINs) and length requirements which this tool verifies:
- Visa:Starts with 4 | 13 or 16 digits
- Mastercard:Starts with 51-55 or 22-27 | 16 digits
- AMEX:Starts with 34 or 37 | 15 digits
What the Luhn Algorithm Checks
The Luhn algorithm (also called the mod-10 or modulus 10 check) is a formula used to detect typos and invalid digits in card numbers. It does not verify that the card is real or has funds; it only checks whether the number is mathematically valid according to the pattern used by most payment networks. If the Luhn check fails, the number is almost certainly wrong (e.g. a mistyped digit). If it passes, the number could still be invalid or unused—so this tool is for format and typo checking, not for authorizing payments.
Validators often also check length (e.g. 16 digits for Visa and Mastercard, 15 for Amex) and BIN ranges (the first digits that identify the network). Our tool runs entirely in your browser: the number you enter is never sent to a server, which helps protect your privacy when you are testing or correcting a number.
When to Use a Card Validator
Use this Credit Card Validator when you are building forms that accept card numbers and want to catch obvious errors before submission, when you are double-checking a number you have typed (e.g. from a form or document), or when you are learning how card validation works. Do not use it to test stolen or fraudulent numbers; validation is for legitimate input checking only. For real payments, always rely on your payment processor’s authorization; this tool does not communicate with banks or card networks.
If the validator reports invalid, re-enter the number carefully, remove spaces or dashes if you pasted them, and ensure you have the correct number of digits for the card type. Some cards have 15 digits (Amex), others 16 (Visa, Mastercard, Discover). Correct formatting and length are required for the Luhn check to apply correctly.
How to Use This Credit Card Validator
Enter or paste a card number (digits only, or with spaces/dashes—the tool typically strips non-digits). The Credit Card Validator runs the Luhn algorithm and checks length and BIN ranges to determine if the number is mathematically valid and matches a known network (e.g. Visa, Mastercard, Amex). Use it to catch typos in forms or when testing payment flows. It does not authorize charges or verify that the card is real or has funds; for real payments use your payment processor. This tool is for informational use only.
The Luhn check works by doubling every second digit from the right, summing digits, and checking that the total is divisible by 10. It catches single-digit errors and most transpositions. It does not detect all invalid numbers; a passing result means the number is format-valid, not that it is issued or active. Never use this tool to test stolen or fraudulent numbers. For PCI compliance, ensure card data is handled according to your processor and security standards. This tool runs in the browser and does not send the number to a server. This tool is for informational use only.
Limitations
This validator checks format and Luhn only; it does not verify that the card exists, is active, or has available balance. It does not communicate with banks or card networks. BIN ranges may change as networks add new ranges. For payment authorization, always use your payment gateway. This tool is for informational and development use only; it does not replace proper payment processing or PCI-compliant handling.
Disclaimer
This tool is for informational use only. It does not authorize payments or verify card ownership. Use only for legitimate input checking and development. For payment processing, follow your provider and applicable regulations.
Discover cards typically start with 6011, 622126–622925, 644–649, or 65 and are 16 digits. BIN ranges can change as networks issue new prefixes. This validator runs in the browser and does not send the number to any server. This tool is for informational and development use only.
When building payment forms, run the Luhn check and length/BIN checks before submission to catch typos early. Always use your payment gateway for actual authorization; this tool only validates format. For PCI DSS, never log or store full card numbers unless you are compliant. This tool is for informational use only.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the Luhn algorithm 100% accurate?
The Luhn algorithm validates the mathematical structure of the number to detect typos. It does not verify if the account is active or has funds; that requires bank processor authorization.
Do all cards use Luhn?
Yes, all major credit and debit networks (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover) utilize basic Luhn checksums as a first layer of input validation.
How is my data handled?
This tool performs all calculations locally in your browser. We never transmit or store your card data on any server.
