Why is Correct Bra Size Important?

Bra size calculation is critical for women's health, comfort, and appearance. Research shows that approximately 80% of women use the wrong bra size. Wrong bra selection can lead to back and neck pain, posture problems, skin irritation, and breast tissue deformation. The correct size helps your clothes look more stylish on you while helping you feel comfortable all day.

How to Take Bra Measurements?

You need two basic measurements to find the correct size. When taking measurements, it is recommended to wear an unsupported, thin bra or be without a bra. You should hold the measuring tape neither too tight nor too loose, and make sure it is parallel to the ground.

1Band Size

Wrap the measuring tape around your chest just below your breasts, parallel to your back. Measure without holding your breath, making sure the tape doesn't slip. The result is usually rounded to multiples of 5.

Example: 73-77 cm is size 75, 78-82 cm is size 80.

2Cup Size

Wrap the measuring tape around your breasts at their fullest point (usually at the nipple). The tape should not compress your breasts, but should not be too loose either.

Cup Size = Bust Circumference - Underbust Circumference

What Do Cup Sizes Mean?

Cup letters (A, B, C, D, E...), express breast volume. They are determined by the difference between bust circumference and underbust circumference:

  • Cup A: Difference 12-14 cm (Small breasts)
  • Cup B: Difference 14-16 cm (Medium breasts - Considered standard)
  • Cup C: Difference 16-18 cm (Full breasts)
  • Cup D: Difference 18-20 cm (Large breasts)
  • Cup E (DD): Difference 20-22 cm (Very large breasts)

Sister Size Rule

If you can't find the exact size you're looking for, you can try the "Sister Size" rule. The rule is: If the band gets smaller, the cup gets larger; if the band gets larger, the cup gets smaller. The cup volumes (breast size) of these sizes are very close to each other.

For example, if 80B doesn't fit you:
- If the band is too tight (tightening your back): Try 85A.
- If the band is too loose (riding up): Try 75C.

Common Mistakes

  • Back Band Riding Up: The band is too large. The band should be parallel to the ground and sit below the shoulder blades.
  • Breasts Spilling Over the Cup: The cup size is too small. Try one cup size larger (e.g., from B to C).
  • Cups Being Empty: The cup size is too large. Try one cup size smaller.
  • Straps Leaving Marks on Shoulders: The band is too wide and all the weight is being carried by the straps. You should reduce the band size.

Bra Care and Usage Recommendations

Recommendations for bra care and usage:

  • Washing: Hand wash bras or wash them in the machine on a gentle cycle. Wash with straps closed
  • Drying: Dry bras by hanging them. Do not dry in the dryer
  • Storage: Store bras by folding them properly. Fold straps crosswise
  • Replacement: Replace bras every 6-12 months. Replace when elastic loosens

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When should bra measurements be taken?

Since there may be swelling in the breasts during menstrual periods, taking measurements outside this period gives healthier results. The best time to take measurements is one week after the menstrual period.

Does bra size change over time?

Yes. Bra size can change with factors such as weight gain/loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and aging. It is recommended to check measurements once a year.

Is push-up bra size different?

Generally no, you should take your own size. However, since padding material can narrow the cup interior, sometimes one cup size larger may be more comfortable.

How long should a bra be used?

Bras should be replaced every 6-12 months. They should be replaced when elastic loosens, straps stretch, or hooks break.

Is sports bra size different?

Sports bras provide a tighter fit. Therefore, it is recommended to take one size larger than your normal bra size.
